Day 2 - Event and Decor
Today I was shadowing the head manager of events and decor, Janelle. To provide a visual, she reminded me of the actress who played Hawkeyes wife. She was very nice and has met Nick Jonas. So immediately given an A+ in my book. She gave me a rundown on the project she is currently working on. Due to Covid, there was a large renovation done at the warehouse that caused inventory to get a bit messed up. Meaning that they didn't what items they still had and how many. Which means neither did their website. Her project I was helping her with is renovating the website, combining the multiple websites they had for the company into one. Fortunately they had already done the dirty work of going out into the warehouse and taking inventory. All that needed to be done was to organize the notes so that they could pass the information to the tech team so that they could input in the website
Easy peasy
Janelle printed out the website pages for each section (i.e, lounge chairs, table lamps, club chairs, etc.) and I would mark down the number that they had in store and also any little notes they left. For example if something was damaged or partly there but missing a piece. Throughout this process I was also able to hear them talk shop and learn about what it is they have to deal with on a daily basis. For example, they are very busy this week with a lot of event rentals going out. This is a large process full of paperwork and communication. However one of the workers placed a large order for a client that was supposed to go out this week. The process of booking event rentals is getting a quota, turning that into a reservation, figuring out delivery or pickup with the warehouse workers and also figuring out payment. This new order was last minute, so they had to figure out how to satisfy the order effectively and communicate with the warehouse workers about pickups and deliveries for the other orders this week and how or if they can fit in this order. It was very interesting to see the problem solving that went into this planning. A very important aspect of this department is communication with the warehouse. They need to talk to them if they have enough people to fulfill, prep, deliver and load all these orders and the timing. Because depending on how much work is required for an order can influence the price as well. It takes a lot of team work and problem solving, that I found super interesting to listen to and experience.
Time flew by and before I knew it, the work day was done and it was time to head home for some relaxing. Overall I would say it was pretty productive and educational.
