Day 4: A Day In Production

Today I shadowed Shant in production. He was a great supervisor and gave me a detailed explanation of what they do on a daily basis.

First we went over the different steps you have to go through when a new order comes in. First thing they explained is how they get clients and orders. An important part of being in production is networking because most of their clients are free lance workers such as production managers or producers that get hired by companies. So it’s important to create a relationship with them so that they recommend Line 204 when they get hired for a new job. Many of the new clients are recommended by current clients. So it’s very important to create long lasting relationships with these people. After receiving an order, if it’s a new client they have to email the client a form to fill out to create a new account in the system as well as provide insurance. Who knew that there was insurance for this kind of stuff?

Another interesting thing I learned is the last minuteness of this industry. They had someone come to pickup an order today and email to add more objects to the order as they were loading the trucks. Because production is all about networking and customer service they have to do their best to be flexible and accommodating. However Shant made it very clear there is a fine line between good customer service and letting them walk all over you. It’s important to stand up for yourself and don’t make promises or bend over backwards in orders you can’t accommodate. But also to do your best to problem solve and try to please the client. But the customer isn’t always right.

After shadowing and getting a rundown of everything, he also made sure to show me how to do it and I put everything. He showed me some emails between him and clients. After a lot of work we had a lunch break. They ordered extra food so we shared sushi and lomo saltado (Peruvian dish). It was very delicious. After lunch was pretty chill compared to the crazy morning. Shant showed me how different water brands actually do taste different. I am officially a water connoisseur. And in turn I introduced him to wordle. We got it pretty fast. What can I say? Teamwork makes the dream work.

Today was super fun. I learned so much and I really think this would be a fun career to pursue. It is full of problem solving, flexibility and networking. Shant was also super welcoming, chill and a great supervisor. Definitely had a fun and productive day today
